After following the Gates family from St. Louis to Lafayette our many paths never crossed again. Too bad! We had much fun and Earl was always up for a discussion. He made our world a bit more interesting. We send our sympathy and fond memories to all the Gates girls.

Hard to believe I'll no longer be getting cousin Earl's informative, sweet and funny emails. I'll always be grateful to him for how comforting he was to my brother and me at our mother's funeral, and for providing us with links to the Gates side of our family. He will be fondly remembered and very much missed!

My deepest condolences over the loss of your father. Although I wasn't privileged to know him personally, he was very well spoken of by many. Like your father, our Lord Christ Jesus thought deeply about life. I pray that the thoughts conveyed at John 11:21-26 will comfort you during this difficult time. "I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life....Do you believe this." Please believe. May the peace of God be with you and bring you peace.

I was so sorry to read your message this morning. Earl was one of the first alums that I came to know after I became president. He did challenge me.... and never in a way that was mean-spirited. I came to deeply appreciate his thoughtful questions. It was some time before I met you, Sherry. I remember a wonderful art show in Champaign (?). I have been on the list for the Christmas letter and always enjoy hearing about the growing family. He will certainly be missed. We send our love and condolences. Mim

Earl didn't know it, but for me he was a role model. I admired his humor and humility, and I admired the way he arrived in our area and integrated himself into the fabric of life here. His community columns and letters to the editor of the Post-Crescent inspired me to become a community columnist. I'm glad that I had the chance to meet him on a couple of occasions. I'm sorry he has passed away. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.
