Douglas M. Crane

July 14, 1923 — December 17, 2016

Douglas Crane passed away at the age of 93 on Saturday, December 17, surrounded by his family. He was born in Appleton, WI on July 14, 1923 to Stanley and Marie Crane. He served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1946 and served aboard a number of ships during WWII, seeing action mostly in the Pacific. In 1949, he married Bette Keapock and they had four children. Doug worked as a pressman and eventually a foreman for Marathon and American Can. He retired from American Can in 1982. During his long retirement, he and Bette enjoyed travelling around the United States. They enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Alaska, California, South Dakota, and New York. He especially enjoyed trips to reunions of his WWII shipmates from the USS Wake Island, which mostly took place in Branson, MO. Doug was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and an avid bowler and sheepshead player. He also enjoyed tending his garden and yard during retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Bette; children: Kathy Mielke, Pat (Kathy) Crane, Ken Crane, and Scott Crane; seven grandchildren: Jessica Crane, Nick Mielke, Stephanie Mielke (Curt Kuester), Sarah Crane, Jon Crane, Tim Crane, and Brian Crane; and five great-grandchildren: Audrey, Natalie, Jett, Lance, and Libbe.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Marie; three brothers, Ray, Frank, and Dick; and two sisters, Dorothy, and Delores.

The family would like to thank ThedaCare at Home, Oakridge Gardens, Prairie Home Assisted Living, and Cherry Meadows Hospice for their care of Doug during the last few months of his life.
