Donald E. Schaefer

Donald E. Schaefer, 66, passed away after a fierce struggle with cancer on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Don was born on March 12, 1944 to Edward and Deloris (Lorenz) Schaefer in Minnesota.

Don served in the U.S. Air Force for two tours in Thailand. After the service, Don worked for Honeywell and travelled the world jumping (literally) onto oil tankers. He had his own industrial process control business in Wausau for several years before joining Marathon Engineers and Architects in Menasha. A private man, Don was soft spoken and highly disciplined. He was meticulous in everything he did, and he could fix absolutely anything.

Don's passion was fishing and his customized Lake Michigan boat was in a class of its own. He enjoyed the natural world, building tree stands with his good friend Larry Londo, planting trees and caring for his pond. He was exceptionally kind to animals, who were drawn to his gentle strength.

Don is survived by his wife, Sara Heironimus Schaefer, Neenah, a brother, Dale Schaefer, his beautiful Aunt Arvilla, and many other wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME TRI COUNTY CHAPEL. The family invites everyone out to 3947 Fairview Road, Neenah after the service for refreshments. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Don's name to the Neenah Animal Shelter.

He left us much too soon.
