Tammy Jo Bloechl-Rutherford left a message on April 6, 2009:
To the family and friends of Daniel Birk, I happened upon the very sad news of Dan's death in our college newsletter. Dan and I were in the journalism program together at UW-Oshkosh (1978-1982). Dan was very kind and helpful to me during that time. The staff of the Advance-Titan student newspaper spent many long hours -- often into the very wee hours -- from Wednesday evening until Thursday morning each week. Although Dan was not required to stay, he always offered to come back to drive me home to protect me from a long, dark, freezing-cold walk many blocks away from campus. All I had to do was call and this kind gentleman would give me a lift. Dan was also a prolific writer and was so knowledgable and dependable. Although we did not keep in touch over the years, I will always remember Dan's selfless, giving nature. God bless you during this time of loss.

I'm so incredibly saddened to hear about this. Dan was a wonderful support to the Alliance for Animals in Madison. He was on our board for several years, and served as secretary. He also wrote articles for our newsletter - his most recent article was featured on the front page and was titled "Dogfighting: Extreme Cruelty to Animals." He volunteered at many events we had, helping out with simple tasks like serving food to people and putting up signs. He had a heart of gold and loved his cat dearly. His friendliness and quick smile was enjoyed by all. Dan and his compassionate nature will be sorely missed by many in Madison. With sincere sympathies, Lori Nitzel Alliance for Animals

I extend my sympathies to the family of Dan. I'll remember Dan for his work with the Alliance for Animals here in Madison, WI. He was always willing to help out in our activities. At the last veggie dinner we had this past April he sold our AFA t-shirts. His commitment to animals was demonstrated so often. His articles in our newsletter demonstrated this commitment as well as his literary skills. He talked about his cat, which was an important part of his life. He will be missed. Sincerely, Betsy Munro, President Alliance for Animals Board of Directors
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

I didn't know Dan well; I served with him on the Alliance for Animals Board of Directors, an animal rights organization in Madison. My impression of Dan was that he cared deeply about society's treatment of animals and was always willing to help in any way he could. His involvement in the organization wasn't easy for him. He was on a fixed income, and coming to meetings or volunteering at our events sometimes necessitated long bus trips and much nuisance. He was a trooper. I believe he would like to be remembered as someone with a large and kind heart, with concern for everyone, human and animal alike; and that is how he will live in my memories of him.

To Dan's Family, Please accept my sympathy at this sad time--Dan left us much too soon. I served on the Alliance for Animals Board of Directors with Dan, and he was a very caring person. He saw the need to take action on behalf of animals, and did a lot of volunteer work in that regard. I will remember him as being very compassionate--and he will be missed very much. Sincerely, Lesley Arena Crocker Madison WI
