Age 56, passed away unexpectedly at V.A. Hospital, Madison on Saturday, May 17, 2008. He was born in Appleton on August 31, 1951 the son of the late Leonard and Helen (Seidel) Birk. Dan served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era, serving on the U.S.S Coral Sea. He later graduated from U.W.-Oshkosh where he earned a bachelors degree in journalism. Dan had lived in the Fox Cities, later moving to Toledo, OH. He then pursued advancing his education in library science in Madison where he became involved in the Humane Society, environmental concerns including the Healthy Forest Initiative, the American Red Cross and volunteered for the Veterans Administration. He will be remembered for his love of cats.

Dan is survived by his sisters: Barbara Birk of Appleton and Nancy (Ron) Drews of Appleton; brother, Thomas (Cynthia) Birk of Maumee, OH; nephew: Nathan Birk of Toledo, OH; and niece: Holly Birk of Maumee, OH. He is further survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton, with Deacon Rick Simon officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service

The family extends a special thank you to the physicians and staff at the V.A. Hospital in Madison for their communicative and outstanding care of Dan and his family.

A memorial fund in Dan's name is being established.
