Daniel J. Garvey

July 26, 1925 — May 6, 2013

After a long, full life beginning on July 27, 1925, Daniel Joseph Garvey of Appleton died peacefully on May 6, 2013, in his home with his loving wife and family by his side.

Dan was born and raised in Appleton, the son of Celestine “Lett” and Agnes (Roemer) Garvey. He attended Appleton High School, graduating in 1943. Following high school, Dan served in the 9th Division, 39th Regiment, I Company, seeing action in the Hurtgen Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. It was there he earned a Purple Heart. Following the war, he completed his college education at Notre Dame, earning degrees in Mathematics and Accounting. When he returned to Appleton, he began his life as a husband, father, community member, and business owner.

Dan is survived by his wife: Catherine “Cate”; his children: Michael (Mary Ann) Garvey, Anne Garvey, Peter (Lisa) Garvey, Elizabeth (Hugh Bayer) Garvey, Paul (Teri) Garvey, Martha (Dave Zasler) Garvey, Daniel Garvey, and John Garvey. Dan also leaves behind his grandchildren: Sarah, Brendan, Evan, John, Elizabeth, Max, Val, Annie, Katy, Bob, Dan III, Matt, Zach, Ean, Maggie, Isabel, and great-grandchildren Riley and Darian. Also surviving Dan are his sister Colleen, his brother Terence, sisters-in-law Ann Marie, Helen, Josephine, and Beverly, many nieces and nephews, Julia and Sandy, and a host of friends.

Dan's pioneering drive and vision led him to pursue forestry, fitness, healthy eating, and computers in creative and innovative ways, well before any became mainstream.

The Funeral Liturgy for Dan will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 S. State Street in Appleton. Private burial will take place at a later date. Friends are welcome to gather at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.

Dan will be remembered for his wit, humor, charm, strong family values, and faith. Success in life can be measured in many ways. The true measure is the story we leave behind. Dan's story is one of quiet virtue, impacting his wife, his family, his community, and his country, in tangible and intangible ways.
