Charles G. Muench

March 29, 1916 — September 10, 2009

Charles Muench, age 93, passed away peacefully, following a brief illness on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Greenville Manor. Charlie was born in Appleton on March 29, 1916, son of the late George and Jeanette (Fulcer) Muench. For twenty-five years, he worked as a mechanic at Johnson City Service on Appleton's south side, and later worked for a time at Automotive Supply. Charlie married Elda Merkel in Appleton on September 28, 1946; she preceded him in May of 2007. From 1940 until 1945, he served his country during World War II as a member of the Red Arrow 32nd Division, 127th Infantry, Company D, and from 1945 until 1949 continued his service as a member of the National Guard. Charlie was a member of the 32nd Division Veterans Association and was a former member of Harvey Pierre Post #2778 of the V.F.W. In his younger years, Charlie enjoyed bowling, golf, hunting and fishing with Harley, Packer football games, and Brewer baseball games. Many will remember how he loved to play softball, and the speed with which “Fireball Muench” could deliver a pitch! He was also a gifted woodworker.

Survivors include six children: Linda (Bill) Watson of Hortonville; Shirley (RJ) Miracle of Papillion, Nebraska; Dick Muench of Larsen and his special friend Kim; Diane Muench of Greenville; Mary (Jack) Effertz of Darboy; and Dan (Jill) Muench of Appleton; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; a sister: Betty Buchholtz of Waupaca; a sister-in-law: Anne Tierney of Wisconsin Rapids; and a brother-in-law: Harley (Audrey) Tierney of Appleton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of sixty-one years Elda, and sisters Ollie, Alice, and Margaret.

The funeral liturgy for Charles will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 14, 2009 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 E. Fremont Street in Appleton, with Rev. Robert Karuhn officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday morning from 9:30 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.

Charlie will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured time spent with his family traveling, enjoying a family meal, cheering for the Packers, or just being together. He will be dearly missed by all.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Sharon and the entire staff at Greenville Manor for the wonderful care they provided. You took care of our dad like he was your own. He could have been in no better hands, and we will never forget your kindness.
