Age 76, passed away in Appleton on Monday, March 22, 2004. Carol was born January 9, 1928 in Wild Rose, Wisconsin the daughter of Jay Wallace and Lydia Gardenier Butts. She graduated from Rufus King High School, Milwaukee. She received a B.A. degree in History Lawrence College and a MA in Library Science from the University of Michigan. She worked at the Milwaukee Public Library before her degree, at the Penn State Agricultural Library after graduation, the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Extension Department Library, Lawrence University Library under Dr. Bruebaker, Lakeland College, Sheboygan as the head librarian and then returned to Lawrence University, Appleton as head of technical services. She retired in 1993 from Lawrence but continued as Archivist until 2004.

Carol worked with the Milwaukee Downer Alumni Group, was a member of AAUW, a member of the Appleton Preservation Committee, and a member of the Friends of Gladys Tabor. She was also a board member for the Green Tree Ravine Condo Association. Carol gave numerous presentations on the history of Lawrence University and Appleton for various groups. She was a valuable resource on the history Lawrence University.

Carol had a very good life with family, friends and pets, especially in the later years with Lionel and Jason, her cats. She enjoyed traveling and was particularly interested in English and Scottish history. A true librarian, Carol read a wide variety of subjects. She had a large collection of videotapes and enjoyed watching them. Carol was very interested in genealogy. She had helped her mother obtain membership in the DAR with her research.

Carol is survived by her brother, Thomas (Mary) Butts Sheboygan; her nephew, Dr. Thomas (Robin) Charles and their children: Andrew, Kirby Ann and Parker, St. Louis, MO; and nieces Catherine Butts(Leon Orszanski), Allens Grove, WI and Susan (Bill) Reader, Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jerome Theodore (WWII); and her sister, Mary Catherine.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004 at the Wriston Art Center, Lawrence University, Appleton, with the President of Lawrence University, Mr. Richard Warch, officiating. Friends will be received at the Wriston Art Center from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Carol’s name is established for student scholarships at Lawrence University and may be sent to Lawrence University C/O Memorial Gifts, P.O. Box 599, Appleton, WI 54912.
