Carmen "Jean" Schunk

September 19, 1939 — February 16, 2018

God saw that she was tired so He called her home. Heaven gained a beautiful angel on February 16th, 2018. Carmen “Jean” Schunk, the “Hat Lady,” passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 78. She was born on September 19th, 1939 in Ashland, Wisconsin to her parents Grace and Sherman Maloney. Jean had two younger siblings, whom she loved dearly, James Maloney and Sherry (Maloney) Borchers. She married William Schunk on November 3, 1962, where together they welcomed three children; Cheryl, Keith, and Sherman.

Jean was known for her infectious laugh, big heart, and “tell it like it is” attitude. She had a tremendous passion for her family as well as helping others. Jean was a devoted mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and friend. For many years, Saturdays were devoted to family. Saturdays were filled with delicious food and “cut throat” card games. She was an avid volunteer at Sacred Heart Church in Appleton, local schools, and St. Vincent De Paul. Through her many years as a volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul, Jean became affectionately known as the “Hat Lady.” She would welcome store patrons with a smile that spread from ear to ear and a new hat every day.

Jean will forever be remembered by the family and friends who loved her so dearly. She is survived by her children; Cheryl (Kenneth) Krueger and Keith Schunk (Jane Young), her grandchildren; Robert and Cassandra Krueger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carmen “Jean” Schunk was preceded in death by her husband; William Schunk, her siblings; James Maloney and Sherry Borchers, her nephew; Brian Reykdal, her parents; Grace and Sherman Maloney, and her infant son; Sherman Schunk.

The funeral service for Jean will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior St. Appleton. There will be a time of visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.

We will forever cherish the countless memories we have of Jean. She may be gone from this earth but she will forever be in our hearts. We would like to thank all those who took such wonderful care of her, especially American Grand Assisted Living in Kaukauna, WI.
