April 28, 1913 — April 4, 2001

Bernice L. Bauer
nee Thornton
Appleton

Age 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at Appleton Medical Center following a brief illness, after having suffered for a number of years the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis. Bernice was born on April 28, 1913 in Menasha, the daughter of the late Herbert and Anna (Weuda) Thornton. She had been a hard worker all her life, beginning at the age of 14 working in the home of Dr. Donovan in Neenah. At the age of 18, she was employed at the Menasha Products Company, until her marriage in 1936. Bernice married William Bauer on April 25, and they enjoyed 44 years of marriage, until he preceded her in death in 1980. Upon moving to Appleton in 1938, they became members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Those surviving friends and relatives can attest to the fact that she was willing to help in any way she could. Throughout her life she enjoyed working and baking. Bernice will be greatly missed by her son Robert Bauer, Appleton. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Bernice was preceded in death by her sister Hazel and her brother Walter. The Funeral Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2001 at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert Raasch officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 6 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to benefit Mount Olive Lutheran church. The family would like to extend thanks to the doctors who treated her during her last illness; and Dr. Robert Fox who provided her with excellent care during the last years of her life. A special thanks to the nurses and support staff from the Fourth Floor North at AMC for their care, patience and understanding.
