Age 87, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Oak Ridge Gardens, Menasha. Bernice was born on August 19, 1916, in Appleton, to the late John and Henrietta (Daniels) Bentz. She married Clarence Hartung on September 30, 1939, in Appleton; he preceded her in death on February 11, 1967. She married LaVern Swenson on March 26, 1971, in Ripon, Wisconsin. Bernice enjoyed cooking for her family and the time spent playing cards with friends. She especially enjoyed her travels with La Vern; together they visited 48 states and toured Europe twice. Survivors include her husband of 33 years, La Vern; her son, Dick (Donna) Hartung, Appleton; her step-daughter, Karen Ann Swenson, Elgin, Illinois; her grandchildren, Kathy (Tim) Kramer, Darboy, Mark (Cami) Hartung, Sussex, Wisconsin, and Patty (Terry) Chomniak, Pewaukee, Wisconsin; her great grandchildren, Jessica, Allison, Emily, Adam and Matthew; her brother, Raymond Bentz, Appleton; her brother-in-law, Robert (Willa) Swenson; and her sisters-in-law, Mildred Swenson, New Mexico, Marge Swenson, Florida, and Angie Swenson, Niles, Illinois. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2003, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 North Superior Street, Appleton, with Rev. J. Christian Quello officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. A memorial has been established to benefit First English Lutheran Church, Appleton. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Oak Ridge Gardens for their loving care.
