Arthur E. Betters

September 14, 1927 — June 23, 2003

Age 75, passed away Monday, June 23, 2003 at his home surrounded by his family. Art was born in Quinnessec, Michigan on September 14, 1927, son of the late Joseph and Alice (Jamarr) Betters. He had been a Kaukauna resident since 1948, and was employed at Thilmany Pulp and Paper for over thirty-six years, retiring in 1985. On June 19, 1948, Art married the former Bernice Mischler at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kaukauna. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kaukauna and a member of the Quarter Century Club at Thilmany.

He is survived by his wife: Bernice Betters of Kaukauna; three sons: Daniel (Monica) Betters of Menasha; David Betters of Kimberly; Anthony (Jean) Betters of Kimberly; five daughters: Kathleen Krahn of Kaukauna; Carolyn (Michael) Hackel of Combined Locks; Patricia Oates of Appleton; Teresa Maas of Kaukauna; Laura (Robert) Rolf of Kaukauna; twenty grandchildren: Sue (Phil) Sobiek, Christine and Heather Krahn, Emily and Amanda Hackel and her fiancé Jason Lamine, Beth Apitz, Brent, Jonathon, and Amie Betters, Michael, Paul and Kaitlin Oates, Nicholas and Scott Maas and his fiancé Kathy Schevers, Brian and Brenda Schuh, Carmen, Robyn, Natasha and Shannon Rolf and her fiance Michael Verhagen; three great-grandchildren: Jade and Trent Sobiek, and Trenton Verhagen; his special little friends Ryan and Maddie Veldman; and an aunt Doris Borden of Neenah. Arthur was also survived by his sisters-in-law: Patricia and Shirley Betters of Kimberly, Phyllis (Don) Craney of Crivitz; his brother-in-law Maurice (Ethel) Brockman of Darboy, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters: Eunice and Lorraine Betters, Evelyn Vander Zanden, Rose Hunter, and Marilyn Brockman; five brothers: twins Louis and Howard who died at birth, Emil, Willard, and Howard Betters and his daughter Diane Depner; his brothers-in-law Adrian Vander Zanden, and Wayne Hunter; his son-in-law Robert Krahn; and two grandchildren Maria Krahn, and Ann Frances Betters.

The funeral liturgy for Art will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2003 at 5:00 PM at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 119 W. 7th Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Robert Udulutsch, OFM Cap. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 3 PM until the hour of the service. A memorial fund is being established.

Special thanks: to our friends, friends of our children, grandchildren, relatives, neighbors, caregivers, and all who helped in our efforts to keep Art at home these past six years. Thank you for the visits, the encouragement, the tolerance, the prayers, the treats, and all the little things that maybe you didn’t even realize you were doing. Thank you Betty and Denny, Margy and Frank, Erica and her chauffeur and friend Charlie, Norma and Lewis, Mary and Hank, Les and Dar, and special dedicated brother-in-law Maurice, and to the Saint Vincent De Paul Society; our wonderful neighbors, Dave, Ellen and Russell, and their loving children, Jim, Randy and Tammy, and Margaret; Father Bob and all the people at St. Mary’s especially the heart of our parish Sister Francine, the staff at Kaukauna Clinic, especially Dr. Danz, his nurses, and the lab personnel whose patience care and concern went far beyond the call of duty. For the warmth and care extended by hospice not only to Art but his entire family; the nurses and staff at AMC for their outstanding care during Art’s many visits; sister Joy and the outreach staff at St. Paul Elder Services.
