Peterson, Alice M.
(Green)
Freedom

Alice (Green) Peterson passed away peacefully in her own home with her family by her side on October 13, 2011. Alice was born August 2, 1916, in Freedom and never left. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mae (Appleton) Green. She married Edwin Peterson on June 14, 1938. She graduated from St. Nicholas Grade School and Freedom High School. She also graduated from Outagamie County Teachers College of Kaukauna.

She then began teaching in a small one room public school with all 8 grades at Golden Rule, Forest View and Elm Hill School. After raising her large family, she was a substitute teacher for 8 years at Freedom Elementary School and volunteered at St. Nicholas School. Alice served on the Election Board of Freedom for 13 years. She was a loyal lifetime member of St. Nicholas Parish and also the Christian Mother's Sodality. Alice took great care of her husband for almost 18 years after he was severely injured from a fall.

She loved crocheting and embroidering and almost anyone who came to visit left with something. Two of her proudest pieces of crocheted work were her “Our Father” and “Children's Bedtime Prayer”. Other sources of joy were her gardens, (both flower and vegetable) praying and reading. Her greatest joy of all were her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great grandchild that made her family five generations of which she was very proud.

Survivors include her children: Pat (Loren) Wiandt, Sister Sandra SSND, Bob (Mary), Roy, Honey (Terry) Garvey, Lois (Pat) Grady, Jerry, Sandy (Jim) Verhoeven, and Joe (Sherry) and special daughter-in-law Karol; 20 grandchildren: Janet, Jean, Rob, Paul, Dawn, Mark, Julie, Holly, Jamie, Jesse, Tonya, Joe, Jeff, Jason, Jill, Ben, Andy, Jeffrey, Derek and Kelly. 26 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by 2 sister-in laws, Gladys (Al) Krause and Rose Mary Green, and numerous nieces and nephews, godchildren and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; sons, Roger and Jim (Morgan) and two infant sons; her parents, her sisters and brothers-in-law; Agnes (Andy) Weyers, Edna (Joe) Rickert, Isabel, Margaret (Tony) Vanden Hoogen and her brother Joe. Also preceding her in death are her husband's family.

The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, W2037 County Rd. S, Freedom, with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Don Newhouse officiating. The visitation will continue at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the mass.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Dr. Brian Scott and the staff of Affinity Hospice especially Tammy and Susan. We would also like to thank our family and friends for their ongoing love, support and visits and most importantly special thanks to our Sister Sandy, Joe and Karol. Without them, we couldn't have kept Mom & Dad at home for all those years.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name.

Our family was blessed with 95 years with our tender Mother. She taught us to pray, work and share. Thank You Mom for our big happy family and our wonderful memories. No more worries – no more cares – sleep tight and happy crocheting!

We Love You MOM!!!
