Bill Nagel, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Appleton Medical Center. Bill was born March 26, 1916 in Menasha, son of the late Frank and Bertha Bessie (Luedtke) Nagel. On June 24, 1944, Bill married the former Gertrude Deno at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Kaukauna. Bill was a graduate of the Kaukauna High School, and worked for three years for Thilmany Pulp and Paper. It was at that time that he became interested in law enforcement, and took a job as a patrolman with the Kaukauna Police Department. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1957, Lieutenant in 1968, and in 1969 was named Chief of Police. He held that post until his retirement in 1978. Bill and Gert have enjoyed their cottage on Boot Lake near Townsend since 1966, and Bill was part of the group who established the Boot Lake Improvement Association an organization which still thrives today. He was an excellent bowler and basketball player, and enjoyed sports of all kinds. While many have claimed to have been there, Bill was actually in the stands to watch the Green Bay Packers defeat the Dallas Cowboys on December 31, 1967 the famous Ice Bowl Game.
Bill is survived by his wife: Gertrude Nagel of Kaukauna; a son: Richard (Gloria) Nagel of St. Augustine, Florida; two grandchildren: Anthony Nagel of Greenville and his fiance Deb Luther and her son Jack; and Angela (Chris) Knierim of Temecula, California; a former daughter-in-law: Carol Nagel of Neenah; and a sister-in-law: Laura Belongia of Kaukauna. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Erma, sisters-in-law Alfa (Nick) Esler, Edna (Gust) Fosberg, Margaret (Earl) Asman; and a brother-in-law Lawrence Belongia.
