William J. “Bill” Verkuilen
N2201 Highway 55, Kaukauna
Age 61 died on Monday, March 17, 2003 at Loyola University Medical Center after a long courageous battle with liver disease. He was born on July 24, 1941 in Appleton to Peter and Mary (Wigman) Verkuilen. Bill was an area resident all of his life. Following his graduation from St. Mary Catholic High School he proudly served with the United States Air Force. After his discharge from service Bill worked for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years until his retirement. He loved to golf, cook, go for walks and biking. He and Jane also loved to travel.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jane (Vander Sanden) Heid Verkuilen who he married on July 2, 1999; 2 sons: Paul (Nora) Verkuilen, Little Chute; Mark (Carrie) Verkuilen, Appleton; two stepsons: Kurt (Diane) Heid, Appleton; Keith (Paula) Heid, Sherwood; two daughters: Sandra (Steve) Kleis, Menasha; Susan (Paul) Washington, Neenah; five stepdaughters: Kim Heid, Little Chute; Kelly (Bruce) Wagner, Kaukauna; Kris (Bob) Mollen, Little Chute; Kathy (Chris) Brabant, Greendale; Katie (Kevin) Voight, Freedom; 18 grandchildren; two brothers: James “Red” (Nancy) Verkuilen, Pleasant Plaines, Illinois; Jeff (Deb) Verkuilen, Appleton; a sister: Dolores (Ralph “Skip”) Stilson, Boulder, Colorado. Bill is also survived by Jane’s mother Rosella Vander Sanden of Kaukauna, her brother John (Arlene) Vander Sanden of Kaukauna, and her sister Darlene (Bill) Crowe of Fremont, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his first wife: Judith Ann (Kolasinski) Verkuilen on May 3, 1998 and a sister: Alice (John) Walsh.
The funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Bill’s name.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors and staff at Appleton Medical Center and Loyola University Medical Center for their wonderful level of care. While we all knew Bill’s ailment was serious, you did everything possible for him. We will never forget what you have done for us.
