Age 67, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 7, 2006. He was born in Milwaukee on July 22, 1938, son of the late Alvin and Louise (Dorn) Bates. On September 28, 1957 he married Janice Grimm in Milwaukee. Wes was proud to serve in the United States Army and in the Army and Naval Reserves. He spent many years employed by the City of Milwaukee as a lead maintenance person for the Sewage Commission. Wes enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends and the “occasional” trip to the casino. He will be remembered for helping others, repairing things and being a talented and avid woodworker.

Wes is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice: children; Steve (Deanna) Bates of Forest Junction, Sheryl (Jeff) Hill of Appleton, Junean Taylor of Appleton; grandchildren: Jenna Bates, Kelly (Corey) Marks, Kristy (Brent) Kasten, Amanda Hill, Melissa Garcia, Wesley Bates and Alexandria Thornburg; brothers: Harold (Delores) Bates and Gilbert (Helen) Bates; daughter-in-law, Teresa (John) Grabowski; and a mother-in-law, Dorothy Grimm. He is further survived by many other family and friends, including Janice’s family. He is preceded in death by his son John on October 10, 1993.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, TRI-COUNTY CHAPEL, 3212 S. Oneida St. Menasha, with Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service. A Military Honor Service will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post 2778 of Appleton. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 13, at Appleton Highland Memorial Park.

A memorial fund in Wes’ name is being established with proceeds going toward children’s eye disease.
