Walter J. Poehls

October 29, 1929 — September 5, 2002

Age 72, was born to eternal life on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at his home, surrounded by his family. Walt was born in Kewaunee County on October 29, 1929, son of the late Walter and Anna (Jerabek) Poehls. He attended the Alaska Grade School, and was a 1946 graduate of the Algoma High School. In 1948, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was proud to have served his country on active duty until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1952. He was currently a member of the American Legion and the VFW. On May 18, 1954, Walt married the former Dolores Schleis in Norman, Wisconsin. Walt was a tool and die maker, and first learned his trade while employed at the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. His career path also led him to employment in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Waterloo, Iowa. In 1973, Walt decided to return to his geographic roots and moved back to Wisconsin. He worked for various companies until his retirement from Hayes Manufacturing in October of 1999. Walt enjoyed bowling, especially with his nephews, listening to “old-time music”, and dancing in his earlier years. Walt proudly watched his grandchildren participate in sports, and was always sure to be present for any other special moments.

He is survived by his wife: Dolores Poehls of Appleton; seven children: Paul (Terri) Poehls of Green Bay and their children Jason, Jeremy, and Kristin; William (Patti) Poehls of Green Bay and their children Jennifer, Joseph, James, and Jacquelyn; Mark (Lori) Poehls of Appleton and their children Karl, Taylor, Justus, Beau, and Brian (Tracy) Poehls and their son Tristin; Patrick Poehls of Appleton and his fiancée Christine St. Cyr and his children David, Nicholas, Tom, Jessica and her fiancé Roger Van Camp and their son Austin; Charlene (Anthony) Rondinelli of Milwaukee and their children Nathaniel, Stephen, and Nicholas; Brian (Susan) Poehls of Gulf Stream, Florida; and Mary (John) Graycarek of Green Bay and their children Jacob, Johnna, and Katie. Walt is further survived by a sister: Ruth Nelson of New Lennox, and by Dolores’ brothers and sisters: Louis (Violet) Schleis of Two Rivers, Rita Lukes of Manitowoc, Betty (Virgil) Michaels of Manitowoc, Sr. Theresa Schleis of Manitowoc, Henry (Gertrude) Schleis of Kewaunee, and Jacob (Delores) Schleis of Kewaunee; a brother-in-law: George Wotachek of Two Rivers; and a sister-in-law Rose Poehls of Cadott. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jerome in 1977, by brothers Harold Poehls, Maynard (Marie) Poehls, Ralph Poehls, and Jerry (Ruth) Poehls, a sister-in-law Adela Wotachek, and a brother-in-law Emil Lukes.

The funeral liturgy for Walt will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at ST. EDWARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, Highway 47 North in Mackville, with Fr. Charles Brooks officiating. Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom. Friends may call from 4 – 8 PM Sunday at the Wichmann Tri-County Chapel and again Monday at the church from 9 AM until the hour of the service. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home. The Fargo Funeral Home of Kaukauna is assisting the family through the
