Age 74, passed away unexpectedly at home on December 13, 2007. He was born in Ironwood, Michigan on October 6, 1933, the son of the late Walter and Vienna Kalata. He attended school in Ironwood and graduated from Gegobic Community College in 1955. He began his radio career in Ironwood at WJMS and went on to be a leading radio personality in the Fox River Valley at WAPL, WHBY, WKAU, and WNAM.
He was currently president of the Appleton City Council and a dedicated alderman for over 30 years. Walter was a long-time member of First English Lutheran Church and served that congregation in numerous ways. He also played organ, was a member of a local organists’ society and he was a member of the Old Third Ward Association.
Walter is survived by his sister, Ellyn Kalata of Warrensburg, MO; a niece, Kyria Kalata, and her son Kyiv; his former wife, Donna, and son, Hugh; and many good friends including Donna Snider, Tom Hollenback, Sally Nelson-Kluck, Dave and Jessie Yeater, Linda Muldoon, and Marge Hohman, who cares for his beloved dog, “Hunter.”
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2007, at the FIRST ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 326 E. North St, Appleton, with Rev. George Detweiler officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Walter’s name is being established.
