Age 73, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Saturday, February 11, 2006. He was born on March 2, 1932, son Ruth Manske and the late Tony Achterberg. In 1978, he married his beloved and best friend, Marie Utschig in Appleton. Sam served in the United States Army as a para-trooper in Germany. He was employed at Gilbert Paper Company for 25 years. He loved to spend time at his cabin with his family, fishing on Pickerel Lake. Deer hunting near Winneconne was also a passion. He was active in city government and advocated the development and completion of the Hwy 441 exchange.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; children: Dr. Michael Utschig of Madison, Patricia (Harold) Carlson of Appleton, Dr. Jo Ann (Hal) Scott of Laguna Niguel, CA; grandchildren: Jesse and Aaron Utschig; Joseph (Julie) Utschig, Christopher (Melissa) Ziemer, Taylor Carlson; and Gavin and Trevor Scott; great-granddaughter: Libby Mae Zeimer; sisters: Judy Kallas, Darlene Tanner and Virginia Schuster; further survived by children: Jeff, Robin and Jennifer Achterberg; and a special cousin, Orville Crane.
The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Monk Elmer and the staff at Appleton Medical Center for their outstanding care of Sam.
