Age 84, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born December 27, 1919, in Lomira, Wisconsin, son of the late Edward and Ida (Gaukel) Zingsheim. He married Betty Thorn on July 13, 1946 in Hartford, WI. Vernon was Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager for the cities of Hartford, South Milwaukee and Neenah-Menasha for a consecutive period of 19 years. He was also the Sewer Inspector in South Milwaukee. Following that, he and his wife owned and operated Zingsheim Realty, a real estate firm in Neenah, for 18 years. Vernon served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Invasion of Peleliu “Bloody Nose Ridge.” Vernon was a former member of the Town of Menasha Planning Commission, former Winnebago County Supervisor, former member of the Fox Valley Board of Realtors, and usher at St. Bernard’s until his stroke in 1992. Vernon loved to golf and play a card game called skat.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters: Nancy J. (Dr. Michael A.) Krueger, Appleton and Jane Jones, Thiensville; one son, Steven (Kip) Whittier, California; seven grandchildren: Gregory and Elizabeth Krueger, Appleton; Spencer Graczyk, Thiensville; Tyson, Crystal, Max and Penny Zingsheim, California; one sister, Violet Konrath, Hartford; two sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Inez Thorn, Peoria, Illinois and Ben, Jr. (Marion) Thorn, Hartford. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Sylvester and Leander; and his sisters: Hortense Hochrein and Mercedes Van Caster, Appleton.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2004, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 West Pine Street, Appleton, with his wife’s cousin, Father Richard Hart, and Fr. John Bergstadt officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will be in St. Margaret Mary Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established.
