Susan S. Richmond

Susan Sophia Richmond, age 84, passed away peacefully Friday morning, November 24, 2023, at Dimensions Living in Appleton, surrounded by family.   Susan (aka Susanka as known to Dimensions Living staff) was born June 11, 1939, in Rhinelander, WI, to the late Nils Paul and Celia (Wojcik) Holmgren.  She moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI during the war, then to Eagle River, WI for the majority of her childhood.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an RN degree.  After her graduation she worked in Chicago and Seattle as a nurse.  She left Marion, IA in 1975 for Menasha, WI to raise her 3 young daughters and to be closer to family.  She worked as a surgical nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital for more than 25 years. 

In addition to her caregiving nature as nurse and devoted mother, Susan was a skilled seamstress, knitter, cook and baker.  She loved to refinish furniture, a talent she inherited from her father.  She was an avid reader, and enjoyed walking, taking in a good movie and good conversation with family and friends.  Susan loved all forms of music and had a beautiful singing voice.  The most important thing to Susan was her family.  Nothing made her happier than spending time with her daughters and their families, as well as cherished times with her grandchildren caring for them over the years.    

Susan is survived by her three daughters, Sara (Jeff) Manderfield, Karin (David) Hintze, and Amy Ropke; her beloved grandchildren: Emma and Spencer; and her brother Nils (Cindy) Holmgren.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Heider.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Wichmann Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha, with Pastor Bob Archer officiating.  Visitation will be on Saturday at the funeral home from 1:00pm until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated to The Alzheimer’s Association of WI.
