Susan E. Drechsel, age 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 4, 2023, at Peabody Manor in Appleton. Susan was born on April 5, 1931, to George and Elda (Schwamer) Schommer in Appleton. She grew up in Appleton and attended Appleton High School. Following her educational pursuits in Appleton, Susan became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at ThedaCare in Neenah for ten years. On September 8, 1951, she married Walter Drechsel and the couple settled in Menasha where they raised their family.
Susan was an easy going and determined person, who was known to be the sweetest person around. She loved her family and left nursing to raise her children-a decision she never regretted- and was a second mom to her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking-especially for her family, and she was famous for her 7-layer salad and her Christmas Cookies.
Susan loved the sun and the heat and especially loved sitting outside just soaking it all in. During her time at Oakridge Gardens and then at Peabody Manor she always asked the staff to bring her outside on nice days. She also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and watching Packer games with Walter.
Susan is survived by her grandchildren: Shane (Sarah) Drechsel, Ashley Pozdolski and Ryan Hutterer; her great grandchildren; as well as sisters in law: Nancy Schommer and Ione Schommer. Susan preceded in passing by her husband Walter, her children: Deborah Hutterer and David Drechsel and her siblings: Richard, Thomas (Dorthea) and Paul Schommer.
A funeral service for Susan will be held Friday June 9, 2023, at 1:00pm at Wichmann Funeral Home-Tri County Chapel, 1592 Oneida Street, Fox Crossing. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 12:00pm until the start of mass. In honor of Susan, light sweet snacks will be provided following the service. Susan will be laid to rest at St John’s Cemetery, Menasha.
The family thanks the staff at both Oakridge Gardens and Peabody Manor for caring for Susan and loving her as we did.
