SMITH, LOUISE M. (MURPHY)
Louise M. Smith, age 98 years, passed away peacefully at Franciscan Care Center on Tuesday morning August 2, 2005. She was born in Appleton on June 17, 1907, the daughter of the late Patrick John and Mathilda (Harper) Murphy. She was united in marriage to the late Benjamin “Benny” Smith on June 10, 1944 in Indiana where they enjoyed many years together. Louise graduated as a nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1928. She spent the early years of her career at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton (when it was only a house) and Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh. She then moved to Indiana with her husband and spent the remainder of her career working in public health with the Visiting Nurses Association. Louise moved back to Appleton about 10 years ago residing at the Heritage Retirement Center and most recently at Fox River Assisted Living Center.
Louise was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton. Over the years she enjoyed volunteer church work, playing bridge with her friends and heading to the north woods with Ruth.
Louise is survived by her sister-in-law Ruth I. Murphy, cousins and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband “Benny”, sisters Margaret Green and Elizabeth “Betty” Friedwald and her brothers Edward, John and Richard Murphy.
The funeral liturgy for Louise will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2005 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence St., Appleton with Father Larry Abler officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the CHURCH on Thursday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. A memorial fund in Louise’s name is being established.
