Shirley J. Schomisch

Shirley Jean Schomisch, age 89, of Appleton, WI passed away on April 10, 2025. She was born in Seven Springs NC on September 18,1935 to the late Paul and Beulah Mae (Brock) Byrd. After graduating from high school, Shirley became an x-ray technician moving to Wisconsin for a job in her field.

Shirley was married to J. Thomas Schomisch from 1959 to 1982 and had six children: Mary Hall (Steve Sorhage), Sarah (Tom) Janz, John (Shellie), Paul (deceased), Joseph (Amy), and David (Heather). Shirley found love again with Les Behm in 1985. They were partners until his death in 2017.

Shirley was a gracious soul who always found the good in life. Her tenacity showed through even in the face of adversity. Shirley enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved children and became a foster mother extending love to the children of others as well as her own. Shirley loved to socialize and had a good sense of humor. She enjoyed adventures and experienced many travels and activities over the years. Shirley was an excellent cook and hosted epic dinner parties. She played the piano and sang. She shared her love of music with family and friends. Shirley was able to see the good in people and had a positive impact on others. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness.

Shirley is survived by her children; her grandchildren, John Paul, Nicholas, Natalie, Eiley, and Samuel Schomisch, and Parker and Kal Schimmers. Shirley is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Peggy (Byrd) Brooks and Linda (Byrd) Vorwerk, brother Doug, son Paul, and partner, Les Behm.

A memorial visitation will be held for Shirley from 1-2 PM on Friday, April 25, 2025 at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St, Appleton, WI 54911 with a service to follow at 2 PM.  Shirley will be laid to rest with Les at Hatton Cemetery in Weyauwega, WI.
