Shirley R. Nelson, 69, died unexpectedly, Saturday morning, May 22, 2004. She was born August 25, 1934, to the late Raymond and Frances Thousand, in Madison and had been an Appleton resident for the past 17 years. Prior to moving to Appleton, Shirley lived in Delafield and Hartland, Wisconsin. While a resident of Delafield she taught at Cushing Elementary School and Pewaukee Elementary School. Shirley was also employed in Milwaukee as a bookkeeper for Auto Parts And Services. While an Appleton resident, Shirley, was employed for 10 years by Shopko as a cashier. Shirley was an active member of the Oney Johnston – Edward Blessman American Legion Auxiliary Unit #38 of Appleton, where she was currently President, a position she held many times, she was the first female member of the Scarlet Guard, she was chairman for the Children and Youth, VA & R, Membership and Americanism committees. Shirley was also a Badger Girls State Counselor and a former member of the Hartland American Legion Unit, where she was a member of the Clowning Unit. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie L. Heino, Appleton; three grandchildren, Clinton, Dustin and Kelsey Heino, all of Carroll, Iowa; a sister, Barbara Colbert; a nephew and two nieces. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 pm, Wednesday and on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. There will be an American Legion Auxiliary and Scarlet Guard visitation at 7:00 pm, Wednesday. A memorial fund is being established.

Shirley R. Nelson, 69, died unexpectedly, Saturday morning, May 22, 2004. In addition to the capacities held by Shirley listed in Monday’s Post Crescent, the following is a list of other positions and offices she held. While a member of Hartland American Legion Auxiliary Unit #294, she had been Membership Chairman, Poppy Chairman, Historian, Secretary, Treasurer, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President and a member of the Color Guard. She had been Waukesha American Legion Auxiliary County Council Treasurer. While a member of Oney Johnston – Edward Blessman American Legion Auxiliary Unit #38, Appleton, Shirley was presently the President, a position held many times and had also been 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, Community Service Chairman, Education Committee Chairman, Visitation Calling Chairman, Parliamentarian, Past Presidents Parley Chairman, Badger Girls State County Counselor, Outagamie Veterans Council Alternate, Constitution and By-Laws Committee Chairman, Standing Rules Committee Chairman and a member of the 8 et 40. Shirley was also presently serving as the 9th District American Legion Auxiliary President and also had previously held positions as 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Assistant Sergeant of Arms, Children and Youth Chairman, VA & R Chairman, Membership Chairman and Spring Conference Chairman. While a member of the Scarlet Guard, Shirley was Secretary-Treasurer of the organization. One of Shirley’s greatest honors, while attending the American Legion National Convention, in St. Louis, was when she was asked to serve as a Page for the convention. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the funeral home, with Deacon Pete Reinl officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 pm, Wednesday and on Thursday from 10:00 am, until the time of the service. There will be an American Legion Auxiliary and Scarlet Guard visitation at 7:00 pm, Wednesday. A memorial fund is being established.
