Sherrill J. “Rusty” Hazard passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was born on October 24, 1932 in Syracuse, NY , the son of Sherrill John Hazard, Sr. and Concetta (Russo) Hazard. He graduated from North High School, Syracuse, NY and NYS College of Forestry and Syracuse University where he obtained a B. S. and an M.S. degree in Forest Chemistry. Rusty was joined in marriage on September 3, 1955 to Merle Charlotte Pabst. They have 2 sons, Sherrill John Hazard, III and Stephen Joel Hazard. He served as an officer for 3 years in the U.S. Navy. The Navy and the sea have remained close to his heart throughout his life. His professional career spanned 38 years in the pulp and paper industry with various companies: Consolidated Papers, C. H. Dexter and Sons, Kimberly Clark Corp., and James River. He holds many patents attributable to his work, among them seminal work in long fiber technology. He was a member of TAPPI for many years, and served on various committees. While living in Suffield, CT he served on the local Boy Scout Council, was President of the Jaycees, and a member of the Suffield Rotary. He served on the Board of the Suffield Housing authority and was active in Junior Achievement. One of Rusty’s special gifts was his enormous talent in Wood Carving. His family and many friends hold as precious, the gifts he carved for them. He especially loved teaching his 2 grandsons the fine art of carving. He enjoyed a life time of gardening, loved fishing, sailing, and home craftsmanship. He is was member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the Wednesday Morning Men’s Bible Study, the Wisconsin Chippers, and is a plank holder of the U.S. Navy Memorial.
Rusty’s family was very precious to him as he was to them. His wit and steadfastness are qualities they will cherish forever. He is survived by his wife, Merle Pabst Hazard of Appleton, WI; 2 sons, Sherrill John (Marcella) Hazard, III (grandchildren, Jack and Mary Frances) of Cheshire, CT; Stephen Joel (Dana) Hazard (grandchildren, Ethan, Haleigh, and Samuel Jacob) of Macon, GA; a sister Jeanne (Morrie) Powers of San Diego, CA, former daughter-in-law, Patti Glosson Hazard, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services are planned for 11:00 AM, June 25, 2005 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Appleton, WI. Calling hours for friends will be at 10:00AM, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be sent to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2330 E. Calumet Street, Appleton, WI 54915 or the U.S. Navy Memorial, Dept WETC, 701 Pennsylvania Ave.NW, Washington, D.C. 20004-2608.
