Age 79, passed away Friday, April 25, 2003 at his home. Shelby was born in LaPorte, Iowa on September 26, 1923, son of the late James and Jessie (Hackett) Smith. Shelby was proud to have served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, and on March 30, 1947 he married the former Beverly Lessin; she survives. For over thirty five years, Shelby was employed at American Can Company. He retired in 1978 as Sales Administration Manager. He was a longtime, dedicated, and active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Appleton. He took his commitments at church very seriously, and has served as Head Usher. In his younger years, Shelby enjoyed pheasant hunting, was a member of the Jaycees, and also served as a Boy Scout Leader. He was also an avid golfer and current member of Mid Vallee Golf Club in DePere where he played frequently with his son Scott, grandson Christopher, and friend Lowell. He also enjoyed bass fishing on Ten Mile Lake in Minnesota as well as playing cribbage and euchre. Many will remember his culinary skills at the outdoor barbeque grill.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years: Beverly Smith of Kimberly; five children: Donald Smith of Pine River and his children Jennifer (Josh) Kramer and Scott Smith; Steven (Kathleen) Smith of Lyndon Center, Vermont and daughter Morgan; Kent (Jennifer) Smith of Whitehall, Montana and sons Christopher Bryson and Grant Smith; Scott (Carol) Smith of Appleton and their children Jeffrey, Ryan, Christopher, Amanda, Catherine, Stephanie, and Laura; Jill (Michael) Henrickson of Grayslake, Illinois and their children Nicole and Casie; a great-granddaughter: Berit Kramer; a brother: Jack Smith of Garden Grove, California; two sisters: Pat Maloney of California and Marilyn Ryder of California; a sister-in-law: Bonnie (Harry) Anton of Marietta, Georgia; and a special nephew Rusty Anton. Shelby was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Robert Carroll, sisters Alma and Vivian, brothers Richard and Gene, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 PM Monday, April 28, 2003 at EMMANUEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 740 E. College Avenue in Appleton with Rev. David Kalas and Rev. Lynn Kollath officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday from 4:00 PM until the hour of the services.
