Age 84, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, May 16, 2001. She was born March 24, 1917, to the late William and Martha (Wolf) Seifert, in Clintonville. Selma attended country schools in the Clintonville area and graduated from Appleton High School in 1935. She had been employed by Service Bakery, Miller Electric and by Dr. William Dafoe for 20 years. On September 20, 1952, Selma married Herbert F. Downey at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Mackville. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Keenagers. Selma was a gentle woman who loved to read and sew and was always interested in other people’s activities. She was a devoted homemaker and dearly loved her grandchildren. Selma will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Herbert F. Downey; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Eric Shelkey; two granddaughters, Kirsa and Kari Shelkey, all of Bozeman, Montana; a sister, Myra McHugh, Appleton; a sister-in-law, Mildred Schaal, Milwaukee; three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Willard Downey, Waukesha; Robert (Jan) Downey, Mequon; Thomas Fiedler, Tustin, CA; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Grace McLaughlin, New London. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie Wenzlaff and Sylvia Seifert; a brother Arnold Seifert and a brother-in-law, Francis McHugh. Funeral services for Selma will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 North Oneida Street, with Reverend Nathan Gauerke officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 pm Tuesday and on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 am, Wednesday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
