Sarah Marie Paul, age 63, of Appleton, died Saturday evening, May 10, 2008. Sarah was born in Algoma, Iowa, on November 5, 1944, the daughter of the late Reverend Theodore and Constance (Lindgren) Paul.
Sarah graduated in 1966 from Winona State University and accepted a teaching position at Appleton West High School. She transferred to Appleton East High School when it opened in 1967. In 1969 she took a 2 year sabbatical to earn her MA at Wayne State University and returned to Appleton West in 1971. Sarah taught speech, oral interpersonal communication, and English. She was not only a teacher but also a tireless mentor, counselor, and advocate for her students for 32 years, until her retirement at the end of the 1999-2000 school year.
Sarah was in both high schools' theatre programs, directing plays, managing the box office, and publicizing events. She was also an active member of the Appleton Education Association.
Sarah was also a longtime member of First Congregational UCC, giving her talents as commission member, church school teacher, and mentor. She was a member of the Genevieve Paulson Circle of King's Daughters for many years. Her love of animals, particularly dogs, led to her countless hours of volunteer work at the Fox Valley Humane Society. Sarah also served on the planning committee for the new FVHS facility.
Sarah is survived by her brother, Sam (Dorothe) Paul, Lincoln, Nebraska; three nieces: Patti, Anne, and Irene; and a cousin, Clarence Bennette. Other family members were her beloved companions: Cyrano, Heidi, and Jake. Sarah's extended family included many dear friends: Julie and Bob, Dawn and Jim, Mary N., Amy, Terry, Jill and Ken, Nancy and Hank, Vira and Alan, Linda and David, Kathy and Jerry, and Sara. She is also survived her goddaughter, Maggie (Brian) Rogers.
Sarah filled her life with giving to her students, her family and friends, her church, and her community.
The memorial service for Sarah will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 2, 2008 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 East South River Street with Rev. Jane B. Anderson officiating.Family and friends will gather an hour before the service to share stories and memories of a wonderful friend.In lieu of flowers memorial funds will be established to benefit First Congregational UCC, the FVHS, and the Salvation Army.
