Age 89, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003 at St. Paul Home. Sarah was born August 31, 1913 in the Manitowoc County town of Maple Grove, daughter of the late John and Sarah (McGinty) Vogel. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Maple Grove and graduated from Reedsville High School. She also graduated from Manitowoc County Normal School (Teacher’s College). Sarah married John W. Hale on April 22, 1936 in Maple Grove; John preceded her in death on September 28, 1988. The couple lived in Reedsville until 1949 when John W. relocated his plumbing business to Manitowoc. Sarah became a vital part of his growing business. Many will recall her generosity and hospitality. While residing in Reedsville, Sarah was an active member of St. Mary’s Church where she was a past president of the altar society. In Manitowoc, Sarah was also a life member and charter member of the Ladies Knights of Columbus where she served as past president. She was also a Cub Scout Leader at St. Mary’s in Manitowoc in her younger years.
Survivors include five children: Allan (Ginger) Hale of Green Bay; Sr. Sara Hale of Holy Angels Parish in Chicago; Sarah Joyce of Kaukauna; Martha (James) Gorzlancyk of Green Bay; and Tom (Sandy) Hale of Reedsburg. She loved and enjoyed her fifteen grandchildren, their spouses, and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sister: William (Lucille) Vogel of Manitowoc; Joseph (Rita) Vogel of Reedsville; Catherine Kabat of Green Bay; sisters-in-law: Mary Vogel of Darboy; Marion (Don) Derfus of Appleton; Clarice Wage of Two Rivers; Ellen (Alan) Coenen of Land O’ Lakes; She is also survived by her dear friend Mary Gable of Madison. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John W. Hale, a daughter: Sr. Mary Hale, a brother: Edward Vogel; a son-in-law: William Joyce; four brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.
The funeral liturgy for Sarah will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1114 S. 21st Street in Manitowoc, with Fr. Thomas Wojciechowski officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 – 8 PM and again Tuesday directly at the church in Manitowoc from 10 AM until the hour of the service. There will be a prayer service at the funeral home on Monday at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
