Age 89, died Tuesday night, April 23, 2002, at Appleton Medical Center, following a short illness. She was born September 3, 1912, to the late Frank and Martha (Jahnke) Behling, in Caroline, Wisconsin. Ruth had been employed by J. C. Penney, retiring in 1987. She enjoyed bowling and knitting and knitted many caps for infants born at Appleton Medical Center. Ruth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she was very active in many church activities, a Past President of Oney Johnston-Edward Blessman American Legion Unit #38, a member of the J. C. Penney 342 Club and she did volunteer work for 17 years at Wisconsin Veterans Home, King. Survivors include two sisters, Lorraine Ankerson, Appleton; Irma Suehring, Marion; five step-children, Christine (Phillip) Tremaine, Julie (Larry) Rowaldt, Gerald (Nancy) Braatz, Robert (Ellen) Braatz, Jon (Debbie) Braatz; nine step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Phylis Suehring, many special friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. John Braatz, on May 1, 1998, a brother LeRoy Behling, an infant sister, Dorothy Behling, two brothers-in-law, Arthur Suehring and Francis Ankerson. Funeral service for Ruth will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, April 26, 2002, at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 North Oneida Street, with Reverend Nathan Gauerke officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 am, Friday, until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.
