Roland J. Buss
Appleton
Age, 69, passed away Monday, December 16, 2002, peacefully in his home, with his family by his side, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Rollie was born in the Town of Freedom on November 30, 1933, son of Lawrence and Eleanor (Merkel) Buss. On February 29, 1952, he married Barbara Salm in Appleton.
Rollie was employed by AAL for 36 years until his retirement in 1987. During his time at AAL, Rollie was a member of the National Guard for ten years. He also worked part-time for Valley Transit after his retirement and later volunteered for Project Self Help and Awareness, driving underprivileged children by bus to and from Mississippi, an activity that he truly enjoyed.
Rollie was a life-long member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Appleton, serving on the church board and actively involved in his church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed golfing with his family.
Rollie is survived by his wife, Barbara, and mother, Eleanor. Also surviving are his children: Steven (Kathy) Buss and their children, Andy and Eric, Menasha; Maree (Fred) Shorter, Darboy, and their children, Melissa and Erica Shorter and Andrea (Nick) Senecal and great-grandchild, Ryan; Brian (Deb) Buss and their children, Adam, Katie and Laura, Appleton; Joan (Tony) Overesch and their children, Mike and Dawn, Appleton; Jean (Bill) Overesch and their children, Sarah and Matt, Appleton; Renee (Pete) Mesner and their children, Molly and Josh, Whitewater; Randy (Barb) Buss and their children, Carolyn and Christopher, Marion.
Also surviving are Rollie’s sisters: Carol (Phil) Burmeister, Albuquerque, NM; Sharon (Bill) Baggs, Shiocton; and brother, Bob (Jan) Buss, Greenville; sisters-in-law Carol (Fritz) Seiler, Kaukauna; Joyce (Tom) Pratt, Santa Maria, CA; Donna (John) Lappley, Oregon, WI; Jan Salm, Appleton; and brother-in-law, Tony (Cleo) Schroeder, Corvaliss, OR, and many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Buss; parents-in-law, Edward and Irene Salm; sister-in law, Helen Schroeder; and brother-in-law, Ed Salm.The family would like to thank ThedaCare Hospice, especially Vickie, for their tender care and support. A memorial fund has been established to benefit St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Rollie cared deeply for his family and especially his grandchildren

Funeral services will be held on Thursday,at 11 a.m. December 19, 2002, at ST. PAUL EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 Morrison Street, Appleton, with Rev. Kenneth L. Frey, Rev. Ralph C. Waack and Rev. John C. Baumann officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again directly at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
