Robert W. (Bob) Nehls

Entered the Lord’s Kingdom on January 29, 2002. Born on December 9, 1914, he was the son of William and Anna (Kielgas) Nehls, and was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, and attended the St. Paul Grade School. After high school and business school, he joined his father who owned the well-known Nehls Wallpaper and Paints’ Store. WW2 interrupted, and he joined the U.S. Air Corps in January 1942. On August 12, while on furlough, he married Nora Forbeck. In September 1942, he went to England as a member of the 8th Air Force, as a Sergeant. After spending not quite 3 years (a couple of them as a flight surgeon’s assistant) overseas in the European Action, He received his honorable discharge October 1945. Upon his return, he joined his brother Ray as a partner in the family store. When his brother retired in 1964, the firm was sold. He then worked for Modern Business Machines until his retirement. Bob’s main enjoyment was bowling. Some of his accomplishments were being the only bowler in the local area to have averages over 200 in the 1930’s. He served as President of the Appleton Bowling Association, as well as 4 years as secretary to the Lutheran State Bowling Association. In 1992, he was inducted into the Appleton Bowler’s Hall of Fame. He was a life member of the VFW, and a life member of the American Legion Post #38. Bob is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Appleton. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nora; his brother-in-law, Wallace T. Roblee; his wife Ruth; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Nehls; and his sisters, Mrs. Lillian (Hugo) Hinnenthal; Mrs. Dorothy (Tim) Sauer; and Mrs. Lucille Bruce. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, February 1, 2002, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Ralph Waack officiating. The interment will be held at Highland Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday, February 1, from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Military honors will be held following the service. Bob was greatly loved, and will be dearly missed by his family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
