Christensen, Robert James

Robert Christensen, age 92, of Century Oaks, Appleton, passed away Wednesday afternoon August 30, 2006 at Appleton Medical Center. He was born in the Town of Winneconne on January 12, 1914 to Nels and Ava (Cross) Christensen. He lived in Oshkosh, Barron, Minnesota, and moved to a farm near Bear Creek, Wisconsin in 1922, where he graduated from Bear Creek High School in May 1932.

After graduation from Bear Creek High School he enlisted in the Army on September 30, 1939 where he served as a medic in Hawaii during World War II and was there when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was discharged from the service on August 15, 1945. He attended Lawrence College in 1945 after his military discharge. He then worked for the Corps of Engineer in Little Chute and Appleton for 30 years until his retirement in 1969. He lived in Appleton after his retirement. He enjoyed studying the stock market and investing in stocks and bonds. He was an avid reader and spent many hours at the Appleton Public Library reading and studying the stock market in the newspapers.
He also enjoyed playing checkers and chess and was known as “ Big City Bob” by his fellow chess players.

Robert is survived by nieces and nephews; Patricia ( Frank) Warmbrunn, Appleton; Kenneth ( Stephanie) Dunlavy, Buffalo Grove Il; Dennis ( Patricia) Dunlavy, Clintonville; Alice Dunlavy, Little Chute; Jane ( George) Clem, Kentucky; Chris ( Bruce) Patterson, Little Chute; Brian ( Gloria) Dunlavy, Clintonville; Tim ( Yvonne) Dunlavy, Appleton; Susan Ransom, Shawano; Mary Christensen, Clintonville and numerous great nieces and nephews & friend Tom Krueger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Nels and Ava Christensen; brother Donald Christensen, sister Ava Jane Dunlavy, brother-in-law Pete Dunlavy, sister-in-law Kay Christensen; nephews Terry Dunlavy and Donald Dunlavy, Peter Christensen & long time friend and companion Louise Thimke. We want to thank the staff at Jansen House, Century Oaks for the wonderful care they gave him for the past six years.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri-County Chapel 3212 S. Oneida St, Menasha, with Pastor Martin Ruge officiating. Friends may call from 9:00am until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bell Cemetery, Town of Winchester.
