Robert Cowan, age 83, passed away Friday, October 6, 2006 at the Appleton Medical Center. He was born in Neenah, Wisconsin on May 19, 1923, son of the late Bert and Lillian (Arndt) Cowan. After graduating from school, Bob “followed the sun” for fifteen years, working in Miami, Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Scottsdale during the winter seasons, and returned to either Appleton or northern Wisconsin for the summer seasons. In 1956 he became a buyer for W.A. Close, Inc. of Appleton, and worked in Appleton, Oshkosh, and the Door County summer shops. In 1958, Bob married the former Deloris M. Filz; she survives. He left W.A. Close in 1982, and for the next twenty-five years he and Deloris were involved in the antique trade. They attended auctions, estate sales, and shows, and eventually operated seasonal shows themselves in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Their winter months were spent in McAllen, Texas.
Bob is survived by his wife: Deloris Cowan of Appleton; two cousins: John (May) Oberweiser and James Oberweiser; three brothers-in-law: Merril “Sonny” (Wahneta) Filz, Marvin (Doris) Filz, and Myron “Bud” Filz; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister-in-law Carmen Filz.
The funeral liturgy for Bob will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 9, 2006, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street in Appleton. There will be no visitation.
