Richard Wankey, age 80, of Appleton, passed away on July 18, 2022 at his home. Richard was born on October 14, 1941 in Appleton to Norman and Florence (Managan) Wankey. He was a graduate of Appleton High School. After graduation he attended the University of Miami on a football scholarship.  He served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army. On April 8, 1967 he married Sharon Lepak at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cassel, Wisconsin and they enjoyed over 55 years together. He was employed with American National Can for over 40 years. Richard loved his family and spending time with and taking care of his grandchildren. He also loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and playing with his grand dogs. He enjoyed fishing, especially Muskie fishing. He liked watching sports and was an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. He spent his final hours wanting to watch the Brewers. 

He loved to spend time up north at Riley’s Rustic Aire on Lake George. He loved to travel with Sharon and some favorite destinations were Hawaii, Las Vegas and the EAA as well as the Oneida Casino. His favorite watering hole was the Lake Park Pub. He liked reading and crossword puzzles and loved music. He was a fan of Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Diana Ross and the Supremes. He also loved his sweets and Budweiser.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Sharon, children: Scott (Tina) Wankey, Cheri (Chris) Borowski, Michelle (Rick) Gilgenbach, and Andrew (Buffy) Wankey, grandchildren: Zachary, Caitlyn, Meghan, Jenna, Tyler, Maggie, Owen, Rory and Ajay. He is further survived by 2 sisters: Noreen (Mark) French and Barbara Wadel, brother-in-law Don Castonia as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Larry Wadel, and sister Mary Castonia.
