Richard Henry Pagel, age 84, of Appleton, passed away peacefully, with his wife Marlene by his side, on February 25, 2022. Dick was born on August 11, 1937, in Menasha, son of Emil and Ann (Stearns) Pagel. He graduated from St. Mary High School in Menasha and attended UW Oshkosh where he earned a bachelors degree in teaching. On October 24, 1959, Dick married the love of his life, Marlene Foth. They moved to Athens, Wisconsin where he began his teaching career. Dick and Marlene lived in Athens for 37 years where they raised their four children.
Dick especially enjoyed sports. He played high school football and basketball as well as two years of college basketball. He coached football and basketball and served as the Athletic Director at Athens High School. He also enjoyed reffing football, basketball, cross country, and track. Dick was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a proud season ticket holder since 1957. He also loved hunting and fishing. Especially the occasional walleye fishing trip to Canada or duck hunting trip to North Dakota. Dick will always be remembered for his genuine love of people and his dedication to Marlene and their children.
Dick will forever be missed by his wife of 62 years: Marlene Pagel; his children: Karen Pagel, Steve Pagel, Tom (Ellen) Pagel, and David Pagel who sadly passed in 1995; grandchildren: Emily (Alex) Feistel, Andrew Pagel, Sam (Amanda) Pagel, and Audrey Pagel; great grandchildren: Julianna Pagel, and Quinn Feistel; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, and siblings Jack, Bob, Jim, William and Mary.
The memorial service for Dick will be held at 11:00 am on Monday June 6, 2022, at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N Superior St, Appleton. A visitation will take place from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Fox Valley Memory Project (1800 Appleton Rd., Menasha WI 54952) are appreciated.
