Richard William Helms, 76, passed away at his Kaukauna home on September 28, 2024, in the presence of family. Richard was born in Appleton on September 14, 1948, to Raymond and Lila (Mantei) Helms.
Dick graduated from Appleton High School in 1966. He served in the Army from 1968 through 1970, including a tour in Vietnam. He worked as a machinist for Badger Northland in Kaukauna and Miller Inc in St Nazianz for more than 40 years.
Dick’s real passion was his woodworking. He was self-taught, not only in basic tools and techniques, but also its history, styles and significant innovators. His woodworking was as artistic as it was functional, leaving a legacy of clocks, jewelry boxes, cabinetry and unique furniture for family and friends.
Dick loved the outdoors. He hunted northern Wisconsin. He fished from Canada to Alabama to Colorado. He backpacked the Rockies from Montana to New Mexico. And he cross country skied throughout Wisconsin and the western U.S. He was up for any outdoor adventure.
Dick is survived by his brother Ronald (Eileen) Helms of Alma, Colorado; nieces and nephews Katie, Willie, and Alana Helms of Denver and Andrew Helms of Los Angeles; numerous cousins; and good friend Tom Schleis. He is preceded in death by his parents.
As Dick requested, there will be no funeral service or visitation. Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cicero, Wisconsin. Donations are not necessary, but if you desire, please send them in Dick's memory to the Kaukauna Dog Park.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Aurora Hospice for their professional and compassionate care during his final months.
