Age 58, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Hospital following a sudden illness. His family was at his side. He was born on February 23, 1944 in Appleton the son of Gerald and Margaret (Hoehne) Vils. He lived in Kaukauna until he graduated from High School, and went to Oshkosh where he graduated from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Masters Degree in Special Education. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin at The Winnebago Mental Health Institute for 32 years, retiring in 1999. His grandchildren were a great joy in his life. He also enjoyed the outdoors, winters in Florida, and sports of all kinds. He was known for his warm hospitality, sense of humor, and his fun loving nature.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 20 years, Judi of Scandinavia, Wisconsin; his three children Rebecca (Adan) Martinez of Appleton, Jared (Susana) Vils of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Melanie Vils of Appleton; his father Gerald Vils of Kaukauna; his two sisters Dar Brochtrup and fiancée Dan Arndt of Kaukauna, and Sue (Tim) Landreman of Fremont; two granddaughters Allie and Mariah Martinez of Appleton, a sister-in-law Jeanette Vils of Sobieski, Wisconsin, a brother-in-law Jay Biersteker of Appleton, several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret in 2001, a brother Ray Vils in 1996, and a sister Kristine Biersteker in 1999.
In respect of Richard’s wishes, a private funeral will be held at a later date. A memorial fund is being established for the Salvation Army and may be directed to Wichmann Funeral Home at the address below.
