Age 60, died unexpectedly on July 22, 2001, while on a sailing and diving cruise in the Bahamas. Dick was born on February 15, 1941, in Omro, to the late Stanley A. and Luella E. (Muthig) Butkiewicz. He married Barbara Dygert Hagan on March 7, 1994.

Dick recently retired from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton where he was a machine tool operation instructor for the past 33 years. He was employed in the Vocational Technical Adult Education system for 36 years. Dick played on the employee basketball team and chaperoned many student events, such as the Spring Break and Winter Ski Tours. He was a member of the Fox Valley Scuba Club.

Dick was a member of the FVTC Faculty Association and served in various capacities, including President in 1991-92 and several terms as an Executive Board Member. He served three terms as a member of the Wisconsin Education Association Council-Fox Valley Board of Directors. Dick was selected as the Wisconsin Outstanding Educator in Vocational Education by the WECAVE organization in 1984. He was also a member of the Wisconsin Association of Machine Tool Instructors and the National Education Association. Dick was also a member of numerous other organizations and received awards.

Dick gave generously of his time and resources helping various organizations and individuals. He touched many lives and always could find time to lend a helping hand to a friend. Throughout his life Dick was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature. He was enjoying life to the fullest at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his son, Daniel (Lisa) Butkiewicz, Appleton; his daughter, Jodi (Ryan) Murphy, Oshkosh; his daughter, Rebecca (Jesse) Ward, Oshkosh; his daughter, Donna Butkiewicz, Omro, his four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexander and Nicholas Butkiewicz and Haley Murphy; his sister, Beverly (Robert) Coats, Omro; his brother, James (Dottie) Butkiewicz, Omro; his brother Keith (Kathy) Butkiewicz, Berlin; and Alan (Lu Ann) Butkiewicz, Omro. He is further survived by Barbara’s children, Carrie (Jerry) Williams, Dunnellon, Florida; Dawn Hagan, Kaukauna; Sherrie Hagan, Charlottesville, Virginia; and her two grandchildren, Stephanie and Grant Hagan; and his former wife, Ann (Dick) Paulson, Omro, mother of his four children.

Visitation will be at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, Appleton, on Monday, July 30, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held later in Mountain, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.
