SAMPSON, RICHARD D. “DICK”
Richard D. Sampson, of Appleton, age 85, died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at his home. He was born in Bath, Maine on March 28, 1922. Dick graduated from Cony High School, Augusta, ME and from Colby College, Waterville, ME. In 1947, he received his Masters in Library Science from Columbia Library School. During WWII he served overseas with the 135th Infantry Regiment in Italy. In 1954 he became the head catalog librarian at the Appleton Public Library and in 1956 he married Alice Newton in Lewiston, ME. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on August 18, 2006. Dick was a member of St. Matthew Orthodox Church in Green Bay, the League of Women Voters, and an active member of the Democratic Party. He was an avid bicyclist, loved classical music and gardening.
Dick is survived by his wife, Alice Sampson; daughter: Tammera Sampson, Lumberton, MS; grandchildren: Jozlynn and Jacobie Baeten, Lumberton, MS; Dezirae Baeten, Merrill, WI and Amos Steffens, Green Bay. He was preceded in death by his sister Alice Hewins and a daughter Jayne Sampson.
The funeral service for Richard will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at ST. MATTHEW ORTHODOX CHURCH, 1226 Redwood Drive, Green Bay with Fr. John Wehling officiating. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Matthew Orthodox Church are appreciated.
