Richard C. Van Sistine Sr. 'Dick'
Age 85
Of Appleton, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on March 24, 2004 at Appleton Medical Center. Dick was born on June 22, 1918 to the late Leo and Anne Van Sistine (Maloney) in DePere, Wisconsin. He married Dorothy Peters on May 18, 1946. Dick proudly served in the Army during WWII. He was a General Manager with North Eastern Wisconsin Bell and eventually became the Public Relations Director until retiring in 1981. Dick had a passion for serving in the community. He was a member of Kaukauna Rotary, past president of Appleton's club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Dick was president of Chamber of Commerce of Appleton, and also a member of the 'Old Goats' of Waverly Beach. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of which he was President of the Valley Council and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the police and fire commission, Knights of Columbus, director of St. Elizabeth Hospital Board from 1984-90, and received the Distinguished Citizen Award presented by the Appleton Jaycees. Dick was also active in the United Way from campaign chairman to being a staff member when he retired. He was active in anything and everything related to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed golfing, camping, which he was referred to as 'Ranger', scouting, a Packer fan and all around sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of 57 years; children: Richard Jr. (Becky), Dan (Sue), Ann (Mike) Geurts, Mary (Brad) Graff, Peter (Mary), Mike (Debbie); grandchildren: Rich (Kimberly), Matt, Paul, Lisa, Luke, Jon, Ben, Elizabeth, Andy, Toby (Heather), Gretchen (Roy), Sara (Britt), Michael (Jill), Amanda, Joe, Katie, Heather (Jim), Tara (Geoff), Brooks, Nick, Lindsay, Bobby, Danny and Melissa; 9 great grandchildren
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and son, Tim.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (222 E. Fremont St.) in Appleton with Father Robert Karuhn officiating. Visitation will start at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of mass. Interment will take place in Mount Calvary Cemetery, DePere. A memorial fund is being established.
