Prof. Frederick A. Manthey

September 20, 1911 — November 10, 2003

Age 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2003 at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. Fritz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 20, 1911, son of the late Prof. William and Hedwig (Saubert) Manthey. He attended Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran grade and high schools, and graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. At that time, he entered the teaching ministry in the WELS and taught in various elementary Lutheran schools in Tawas City, Michigan, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Fritz married his high school and college sweetheart, the former Irene Kremmer on June 26, 1937, while teaching in Rhinelander. During his years in Manitowoc, he was instrumental in forming the Lutheran high school there. After teaching there for several years, he went back to his alma mater, Dr. Martin Luther College to serve as the Professor of English and Journalism in the high school department. When the college and high school campuses divided, Frederick moved with the high school to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He taught there for eleven more years before retiring. His ministry to the lambs of Christ encompassed fifty-five years.

His marriage to Irene was blessed with six children; Miriam (Jerry) Gronholz of Appleton and their children Dawn Marowsky, Shelley Gronholz, Amy Meyer, and Katy Gronholz; Elsa Manthey of Appleton; Muriel Manthey of Fort Atkinson; Syda Reinhard of Sturgeon Bay and her son Scott Reinhard; Gretchen (Mark) Boehme of Seminole, Florida and their children Jennifer, Linnae, and Joel; and Rev. Marcus (Barb) Manthey of Saginaw, Michigan and their daughter Jessica; thirteen great-grandchildren. Fritz was preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister-in-law Elvera (Clarence) Murphy.

Funeral services for Frederick will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 17, 2003 at ST. LUKE EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 705 Greenfield Drive in Little Chute with Rev. Ronald Szep officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee. Friends may call on Monday, directly at the church from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service.
