810 Memorial Drive Chilton, formerly of 2325 S. Gladys Ave. Appleton.
Age 92, died April 17, 2002 after a lingering illness. Paul was born August 22, 1909 and was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. He was the youngest of seven children born to Willis B. Swartwout I and Marion (Frost) Swartwout. Paul’s parents were founding members of Kingsley United Methodist Church of Milwaukee and provided Paul with a strong foundation of faith. When Paul’s brother Arthur died at the age of nine from diphtheria, his family donated a stained glass window, engraved in Arthur’s memory, to their church. Paul was active in his church as a member of the Methodist Men and the church choir. Paul was also an excellent pianist. He had studied to be a concert pianist. However, he gave up this pursuit when it became evident that he would not be one of the top pianists in the world.
Paul was also a very intelligent man. He attended Marquette University and later transferred to Purdue University where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Paul worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the Pabst brewing company where he met and fell in love with the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President. They eloped to Maquoketa, Iowa, where Paul married Helen Dorothy (Brauer) Swartwout on January 20, 1940. They enjoyed 49 wonderful years of marriage. Paul also worked as a mechanical engineer for the Schlitz and Stroh’s brewing companies in Milwaukee, WI where he and Helen raised their family.
Paul and Helen were the proud parents of one son, Dr. Paul Richard, and two daughters, Marion Janice and Lucille Anne. Paul was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Paul enjoyed fishing, golfing, and gardening. He was also an active member and officer of the National Association of Power Engineers. After retirement at age 62, Paul worked for U.W. Madison for three years. In more recent years, Paul had been living and enjoying many leisure time pursuits in Appleton. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Appleton. Paul moved to Chilton Health and Rehabilitation Center in July of 2001 due to a decline in health and resided there until he passed away quietly in the presence of friends.
