Norman C. Johnson

Norman C. Johnson, 92, of Appleton, WI, passed away on May 21, 2022, at home surrounded by his family.

Norm was born on April 5, 1930, to Rose (Hofer) Johnson and Otis Johnson in New Glarus, WI. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1948 and went on to study education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Go Bucky! After graduating in 1953, Norm taught science at Benton High School in Benton, WI.

On August 6, 1955, Norm married the love of his life, Barbara Gehrman in Hurley, WI. They lived in Benton for a year before returning to Madison so Norm could work on his Master’s degree. He graduated in 1957 and they moved to Appleton where Norm took a position with the Appleton School System. He was a guidance counselor at Madison Junior High for a year before moving to Appleton West High School. He was a guidance counselor there, retiring in 1994. He was passionate about education and loved working with youth.

Norm is survived by his wife Barb, children Joe, Beth, and Karen (Jim); grandchildren Tyler (Alisha) and Kyle (Staci) and greatgrandchildren Landon, Ascher, Jude, Carsen, Kaylee, Norah and Eli. He is also survived by his cousin Ginger, sister-in-law Shirley, and nephews Mark, Eric, Tom, and John.

Norm was an active volunteer at Faith Lutheran Church, serving on the board of education, board of social ministry, senior ministry, midweek school and with the youth. He served as a reading tutor at Lincoln Elementary for many years. He was an active member of the Golden K and the YMCA.

The memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave. in Appleton on June 9, 2022, at 1 pm, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be at the church from 11 am to the time of the service. Masks are welcome and would be appreciated. Norm's ashes will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church Radio Ministry or Senior Ministry, or a charity of your choice.
