Norman F. Pope
Age 89, of Appleton, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2002 at his resident. He was born on October 18, 1912 to the late Louis and Helena (Denkert) Pope. Norman married Carmen Meartz on September 18, 1937 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and would have celebrated their 65th Anniversary next month. In his early years he was an avid baseball and hockey player. His skill at playing baseball was how he got his first job out of school during the depression for Fox River Paper Mills. He worked at the Appleton Woolen Mills for 47 years retiring in 1978. He loved golfing, bowling and expressed his artistic talent by woodcarving, playing guitar/fiddle and having played the trombone in a swing band. Very important to him was his faithful service to St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church which started when he attended grade school there. Norman was a member of the choir, men’s quartet and the first Fox Valley High School mortgage burners in addition to other committees and boards.
Norman was survived by his wife, Carmen of Appleton; daughter: Kristin (John) Sobiesczyk of Merrill, WI, granddaughter, Nicole (Kendall) Hull, of Appleton and their daughter, Brigita, grandsons: Stanley and Andrew Sobiesczyk of Merrill, WI, and Michael Schnell of Neenah, WI. Norman’s only sibling survives him, Melvin (Dorthy) Pope of Oshkosh, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church (129 S. Mason St.) in Appleton with Pastors David Pagel and Jeffrey Verbeke officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM until the time of service also at church. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
