Age 92, passed away peacefully with her children at her side at Manor Care in Appleton on Sunday, February 15, 2004. She was born in DePere on June 2, 1911, daughter of the late Peter and Hattie (Linders) Smits. On November 29, 1934 she married John Minten. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together. Norma was a proud member of Holy Name Catholic Church. Norma was also a member of Christian Mothers and The Catholic Order of Foresters. Her hobbies included crocheting and knitting. Each of her grandchildren received an afghan when they graduated from high school. Norma loved to spend time with her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits.
Norma is survived by her children: Gerald (Marilyn) Minten of Combined Locks, David (Carolyn) Minten of DePere, Joan (Ronald) Hammen of Combined Locks, Nancy (Clair) Bolwerk of Kimberly; daughter-in-law, Janice Minten of Darboy; 21 grandchildren: Kaye (Dave) Reinke, Karen (Bill) Mory of Haslett, MI, Julie (Tim) Wettstein, LeeAnn Hammen, Mary Hammen, Ellen (Jeff) Liethen, Debbie (fiancé, T.J. Ott) Minten, Kelly (Jim) Sanderfoot, Lisa Vandehey, Todd (Sarah) Minten, Cindy (Tom) McMahon, Tracey (Paul) Van Hoof of Germany, Jeff (Deanna) Minten, Brian (Linda) Minten, Vicki (Fiancé, Mike Fischer) Gilmore, Michael (Denise) Bolwerk, Dan (Cathy) Bolwerk, Brenda Bolwerk, David (Mary Jo) Bolwerk, Michele (Rod) Snyder of Chicago, and Marc Minten Eau Claire; 34 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; brother, Lloyd (Jean) Smits; sisters; Dorothy Thomson of DePere, Della (Gene) Spreeman of DePere, and Verna Mae Parins of Howard; sisters-in-law: Gen Smits, Lorraine Smits, Regina Minten, Agatha Minten and Johanna Anderson. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Norma is preceded in death by her husband, John; a son, Eugene; three brothers: Roman, Clarence and Raymond Smits; and Steve Vandehey.
The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2004 at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Fr. Dennis Bergsbaken officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Holy Name Cemetery, Kimberly.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Manor Care and Heartland Hospice. A special thank you is also extended to her guardian angel, Linda Minten, and Norma’s roommate, Gert Sager.
A memorial fund in Norma’s name is being established.
