Age 92, died Monday afternoon, September 16, 2002, at Franciscan Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 3, 1910, to the late John and Louise (Wagner) Schafer, in Menasha and had been an area resident all of her life. Myrtle enjoyed bowling and crocheting. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. Survivors include a son and two daughters-in-law, Dick and Toni Van Hammond, Appleton; Dolores Van Hammond, Kimberly; a daughter, Mary Jane Paalman, Manawa; seven grandchildren, Jim Van Hammond, Mary Ann Bohne, Lucy Walker, Christine Driessen, Tim Van Hammond, Tina Van Handel, and Todd Van Hammond; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; two brothers, Lyle Schafer, Oshkosh; Charles Schafer, Menasha; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and William Graves, Menasha; her in-laws, Josephine Sanderfoot, Angeline Vande Berg, Wilma Van Hammond, and Ann Van Hammond, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Van Hammond, on July 25, 1970, a son, Marshall Van Hammond, on April 9. 1990, a son-in-law, William Paalman, six brothers, Norman, Wilber, Clarence, Donald Jack, and Marshall, two sister, Pearl (Raymond) Sheprow and Mary Lou Schafer, a sister-in-law, Rose Schafer, in-laws, Joseph Van Hammond, Clarence Van Hammond, Earl Van Hammond, Harold (Martha) Rusch, Clarence Sanderfoot, Wilbur Vande Berg, and Martin Van Roy. The funeral liturgy for Myrtle will be held at 12:00 pm, (Noon), Thursday, September 19, 2002, at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, with Father David Belongea officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10:30 am Thursday, until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in her name.
