Michael Gerard Vogt, dear husband, father, grandpa, and educator to many went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2024 at the age of 74.
Born on June 11, 1949 to parents, Robert Peter and Rachel Lucy Vogt in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Michael excelled in academics himself, graduating from Brown Deer High School, later going on to attend Lawrence University of Appleton, Wisconsin (Magna Cum Laude), and obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Eager to excel, he received his Ph.D. in Economics as well.
He married Lois on June 15, 1974 in Madison, Wisconsin and began his career at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. They moved to Michigan in 1978 so that Mike could teach Economics at Eastern Michigan University of Ypsilanti, Michigan. As a tenured professor there he published articles, wrote his own book, was the director the graduate program, and after over 35 years of teaching he retired and became an Emeritus Professor in 2016. Michael was a respectable and committed mentor, and source of support for those who had the privilege to be taught by him and knew him, leaving a profound impact on the world of education.
When not in the classroom, Michael enjoyed traveling the United States, Europe, and Asia with his wife, family, or for work. Michael always made it a priority and looked forward to visiting family back home in Wisconsin and enjoyed playing cards and drinking beer with his brothers. Family meant the world to him and he dearly loved his children and grandsons. His faith was also important to him and he was active at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in bible studies as well as international bible study groups and Promise Keepers. When he was younger, he played baseball and later in life he enjoyed watching sports especially NFL and college football. He was an avid walker and neighborhood friends always enjoyed chatting with him when he walked his beloved dogs, Jeremiah and Hank.
Michael will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Lois; children, Michelle (Keith) Chaffin and Daniel (Linda) Vogt; grandsons, Joshua, Bennett, Noah, and Ellis; brothers, Larry Vogt, Steve (Debbie) Vogt, Jim (Donna) Vogt, Dennis (Judy) Vogt, and David (Jacque) Vogt; and a host of nephews and nieces, along with extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and beloved sister-in-law, Kathy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
A graveside service, placing Mike into the hands of the Lord will be held at the Friesland Cemetery on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12:00 Noon. Friends are asked to gather at Trinity Lutheran Church (adjacent to the cemetery) on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
