Nyman, Melvin “Mel” Sr.
Melvin “Mel” G. Nyman, Sr. age 85, of Appleton, died at 10:12 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008, at St Elizabeth Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Mel was born in Appleton on September 29, 1922, to the late George and Katherine (Boyle) Nyman. He was a 1940 graduate of Appleton High School. Mel proudly served his country during WWII, serving with the Eighth Infantry Division in Germany and France where he was awarded several service medals, as well as the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Star. He was employed for 41 years at George Banta Corporation in Menasha. Mel was married for 34 years to Marjorie Kimball Nyman, who preceded him in death in 1981. He enjoyed bowling, deer hunting, fishing, and Packer games, having actually attended the Ice Bowl. Mel and his family spent many wonderful years at the cottage at Bear Lake. For over 19 years, Mel lived at Post Lake, making many friends, including his special friend, Mary Patefield. He is survived by three sons and two daughters Mel Nyman, Jr. and Mary of Dale, WI Alan Nyman of Appleton, Kimball Nyman and Grace of Oshkosh, Margaret “Peg” Otis and Greg of Appleton, and Mary Hewins of Brillion; thirteen grandchildren Melissa (Mike Nygard) Nyman, Jennifer Nyman, Bill Nyman, Mike Nyman, Scott (Julia) Nyman, Heather (Eric) Pedersen, Corey Otis, Adam Otis, Meghan (Rayn) Warner, Elise Nyman, Jesse Hewins, Jacob Hewins, and Clara Hewins. Mel is further survived by his sister, Joyce Nyman and a close family friend, Carole Ristow; four great grandchildren, Greg and Abbey, and Dylan and Casey; also his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harry and Jackie Kimball. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 East Lourdes Drive, Appleton, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Menasha, on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again directly at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. Military Honors and entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital-Subacute Unit; Gardens of Fountain Way and Oak Ridge Gardens for their loving care.
