Age 78, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 14, 2001. Melvin was born on September 8, 1922, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin to the late Worden and Mabel (Phile) Potter. Melvin’s family moved to the Appleton area, where he met and married Emma VanAgtmael on January 3, 1943. After completion of his military duties with the U.S. Army in California, Melvin and Emma returned to Appleton. He was employed at several dairies in the area and retired from Morning Glory Dairy in 1979. Melvin was a lifelong member of Teamsters #563; was a longtime Scout Master for Troop #72 at Badger School. Melvin admired the Amish and was proud of his friendship with them. Together with his wife of 58 years he raised eight children, Larry (Verlea) Potter; Will (Barb) Potter; Bonnie Pennington; Betty (Jim) Braun; Kathy Mislinksi; Penny (Jim) Bowen; Frank (Donna) Potter; Mel (Cindee) Potter. Melvin is further survived by 20 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; his brother, Al (Berniece) Potter; his sisters, Helen Renier and Hilma Abendroth; numerous relative and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Violet “Vi” Zirbel; his brothers, Ray (Millie) Potter; his brother-in-law, Ray Renier; daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Marla and Kirsten Potter; and two grandsons, Paul H. Mislinski, Jr. and Charles “Chuck” Potter. Funeral services will be private. Friends may call at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, Appleton on Wednesday, January 17th, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. A memorial has been established in his name.
